Abstract

The experimental studies related to the antagonistic actions of Escherichia coli 25 against Shigella flexneri 2a inoculated on the 9-day old chick embryo and the mechanisms involved in such actions. The results are summarized as follows:
1. The growth of the Shigella flexneri 2a was inhibited by the inoculation of live E. coli 25 into the egg yolk. Definite growth suppression occurred 30 hours after the inoculation of E. coli 25 and reached maximum inhibition level after 48 hours.
2. Growth suppression of Shigella flexneri 2a was not demonstrable following inoculation of sterile filtrate of an E. coli 25 into the allantois and egg yolk.
3. There was no observable decrease in susceptibility to Shigella flexneri 2a by the inoculation of live E. coli 25.
4. Between the non-infected and mixed-infected chick embryos, no significant differences in pH of the allantois and the egg yolk could be detected.
